All About the Artist: Jun Yang

Jun Yang is a self-taught, Korean-immigrant artist who lives and works in San Francisco. Queerness serves as the heartbeat of his artistic expression, informing his choice of subjects to color palettes. “With its depth and diversity, Queerness inspires me to push boundaries, challenge conventional norms of beauty, and celebrate the spectrum of human experience,” Yang says.

What is your chosen medium and focus as an artist?

I use acrylic on canvas with a focus on vibrant, large-scale portraits that capture the essence of queer joy and resilience. My work aims to celebrate the diversity and strength within the queer community — creating visibility and representation by telling stories of love, pain, identity and pride.

Why are you hosting this during Pride Month?

The time is incredibly meaningful to me. It’s a moment of celebration, reflection and community where we can showcase the beauty and vibrancy of queer lives, stand in solidarity with our community and welcome allies into our world. This event contributes to the spirit of Pride, offering a space for connection, creativity, and celebration.

What do you hope for participants?

My goal is for everyone to feel more connected to their own creativity, the broader queer community, and the allies who support us. I want them to take away not just the art they’ve created, but also the memories of laughter, shared stories and the warm embrace of a community that celebrates diversity and inclusivity.

Do you need any artistic experience?

Absolutely not! Nipz & Sipz is designed for everyone, regardless of their artistic background or ability. It’s about the joy of creating in a welcoming, judgment-free zone. I encourage everyone to express themselves freely and enjoy the process of creation.
